The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.
